SPELLING NOV. 10 WEEK AND HOMEWORK REMINDER
The spelling words this week are 2 syllable words. A syllable is when you can hear a break in the word - it kind of splits as you say it. For example, elephant has 3 syllables. Students have been taught to clap at each syllable to hear how many there are.
For the Pre-test I have started giving 5 list A words and 5 of the both words in order to determine if students make to to List B. However, sometimes students make it to List B but do not study it all week long and therefore, do not do well on the test. If this continues to happen, those specific students will remain on List A even if they got 2 or fewer mistakes on the pretest.
Also remember, as students are practicing the words at home, make sure they know the meanings of the words. The spelling test consists of 5 sentences where words are used in context, and if students don't know the meaning, often time they will have trouble identifying the correct way to spell a word.
Please remember to practice spelling words during the week either by using options from the Spelling menu I sent home, or by making up your own practice.

Nov. 3 Spelling
This week we will be having a review spelling test on the first five lists. The words will just be from List A and the Both sections - NOT LIST B. I will pull 20 random words out of these lists to test them on. Please review all the previous spelling cards this week.

WEEKLY LIST A AND B WORDS WILL BE UPLOADED HERE. PLEASE READ THROUGH THE HOMEWORK SECTION OF THE PARENT HANDBOOK WHICH WAS GIVEN AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR AND CAN ALSO BE FOUND IN THE "FILE UPLOADS," SECTION. IT IS VERY DETAILED AND WILL GIVE YOU EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HOW HOMEWORK WILL BE DONE THIS YEAR.
REMEMBER, STUDY FOR THE LIST THAT IS HIGHLIGHTED FOR YOUR CHILD AND THE "BOTH SECTION." IT WILL BE A TOTAL OF 15 WORDS. THE EMPHASIS THIS YEAR IS ON LEARNING A PHONETIC PATTERN, NOT JUST MEMORIZING WORDS WHICH CAN BE FORGOTTEN LATER. SO ON THE ACTUAL TEST ON FRIDAY, THERE WILL BE 5 WORDS THAT STUDENTS DID NOT PRACTICE, BUT WILL FOLLOW THE PHONETIC PATTERN. THIS IS TO DETERMINE IF THEY UNDERSTAND THE SPELLING CONCEPT AND WILL GIVE A MORE TRUE ACCOUNT OF SPELLING FLUENCY RATHER THAN JUST MEMORIZING THE WORDS.
PLEASE ALSO REMEMBER TO KEEP THE METAL RING WITH THE SPELLING WORD CARDS SAFE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR BY LEAVING IT IN THE HOMEWORK POUCH IN THE HOMEWORK FOLDER. STUDENTS SHOULD ALSO REVIEW OLD WORDS BECAUSE EVERY 6 WEEKS WE WILL HAVE A REVIEW TEST.
